Aruba Truth; John Pauly, Media Adviser, Speaks Out About Aruba Media Coverage

Aruba Truth has come out with an article on the media’s coverage of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway that would appear hardly helpful in the PR battle that they wage for the Aruban government. As Aruba Truth states in a somewhat interesting question as to the conduct of the media, many have also wondered why this Task Force does not also question the investigation of the Natalee Holloway investigation as even their own Prime Minister has admitted mistakes were made. Today’s criticism is as follows:

As coverage continues with little to no development or new evidence against the primary suspects have questioned how members of the media have conducted themselves.

Now for a big surprise John Pauly, a media advisor to the Aruba Task Force, conducts an interview as to his experiences with the main stream media. Did I mention he was the media advisor to the Aruba Task Force?

“The media was just running wild down there,” said Pauly in a telephone interview from his Philadelphia home. “This little country has never been caught in a media storm and had no idea what was going on. Everyone is sympathetic to Beth Holloway (Natalee’s mom) for losing her daughter. But the media overwhelmed the island. They were chasing people down the street.”

The island of Aruba most likely was unprepared for such a media event like the disappearance of Natalee Holloway; however, one may want to question why the MSM became the way they did. One wonders whether it was from rumors and leaks that may even have come from authorities and investigators of the case. There was more than one occasion where a high ranking official or individual in the LE made a statement and then it was stated later that they were either misquoted, taken out of context or misinformed.

The one thing that I will state that makes no sense from a PR stand point is to infuriate a media that one claims is already against you. I would like to think that a media advisor would comprehend such a thing.

He thinks the mainstream media – the broadcast networks and the Associated Press – has been very professional. But he says he has witnessed some outrageous, out-of-control behavior from Fox News anchors and producers and CNN’s Nancy Grace.

“It all turned out to be absolute nonsense,” said Pauly. “Nancy Grace is a drama queen. She bounces from the Queen of Overkill to a cheap-shot artist. It has nothing to do with the facts. She is the worst.”

Pauly doesn’t have much use for Fox News, either. But he considers Greta Van Susteren as the most fair. “That is like saying Curly is the smartest of the Three Stooges,” said Pauly. Fox News wouldn’t respond to Pauly’s comments.

It is hard to imagine that a “media consultant” is in turn actually mocking his own profession. Pauly references the cheap shots made by others in the media with ones of his own. That hardly seems the high ground professionally or even helpful.

With all the questions that there have been regarding the handling of this case and as previously referenced the fact that Nelson Oduber, the Aruban Prime Minister, had even stated there were mistakes done in the investigation; how could this comment be helpful to anyone?

“The Aruban police thought the American media were morons because of all the misinformation they were putting on the air,” said Pauly. “So they weren’t about to cooperate with them.”

He persuaded the police to co-operate with the media or risk the probability that the media would stake out the prison and suspect’s homes and there would be threats to public safety.

I think one needs to remember at the end of the day John Pauly is the media advisor to the Aruba Task Force. What else would anyone else expect him to say? It hardly makes sense to continue down this path and think anything good can come from it for Aruba. What is truly sad and appalling is that John Pauly, someone who should know better, has just repeated Paul Van der Sloot’s line of “No body, no crime“.

“Look at it from a logical point of view,” said Pauly. “There’s no body, so there’s no murder. There’s no crime. There’s no rape because there’s no complainant. There’s no forensic evidence, no credible witnesses. So what are you going to do with these guys?”

What are they thinking?

It is of my opinion John Pauly is an unemployed journalist/writer whom is deliquent on real estate taxes on the island of Aruba. Just another scam by Rudy Croes.

I get it now … more than four months since Natalee Holloway disappeared, and it’s the fault of the American media, shamelessly hounding those devoted Aruba police.

So who was doing the landfill search, anyway? Wasn’t it American volunteers with an occasional Aruban pitching in?

If the Aruban police have a low opinion of the American media, guess what we, the American people, think of the Aruban police and their judicial system (if that’s what you call it)….

Aruba “Truth”‘a mouthpiece is also the spokesman for the porn industry. Here, he sends an open letter to Dr. Phil, asking to share information on his show. Interesting how he’ll now try to prevent his client from going on the very same show.

Anyway, not the most dignified sort of association…

The media did do an extensive coverage of it. Whether they were running wild I’m not sure, and frankly don’t care. I’m not concerned about Arubas image. I’m more concerned about murderers roaming free amongst tourists and things that are obviously safety precaucations. aruba kinda brought this on themselves by doing such a lousy job of investigating. They deserve the flak. I’m also more concerned about the truth to Natalee’s family than I am how bad the media coverage made Aruba look.
If the media coverage was running wild what were murderers running, what were rapists running, and does anyone think that the police were running a little wild, or how about the judicial system?

The John Pauly comments really infuriate me. In my opinion
he must also know of what happened at the Light House,
and the videos you have posted on your sight.

John Pauly is beyond stupid. All that he does is point out that Aruba is the perfect place to commit a Capital crime. Arrogant, stupid and continuous lies is the hall mark of what has come from Aruba from the beginning. Why don’t they take out adds in major North American news papers ” We don’t investigate rape or murder so keep sending your money and daughters down here”.

why is it continually necessary to shoot the messenger….oh yeah he happens to not agree with your view…

mojo’s right. thank goodness for a different perspective.

I don’t believe anything released by the Aruban government. They
are only trying to save their skin by insulting the American media.
Maybe they will realize when Americans boycott!

      Mojo -

When a nation’s government hires a PR person who also happens to be the PR person for the PORNOGRAPHY industry, it says something about that government, their values, and who they choose to associate themselves and their reputations with.

What is interesting are the photos posted here yesterday; this Pauly fellow is seen laughing and chatting with the van der Sloots, Paulus and Joran and Anita. One would think a government representative and head of their PR would disassociate himself from the murder/rape suspects and spend as much time as possible consoling and comforting the family of Natalee.

Those photos were much more worrisome than Pauly’s other job as Pornography Industry spokesman, though that too is indicative of Aruba’s values, that they’d hire someone like him to represent their island.

    11. bizman12 on October 10th, 2005 11:24 am

Obviously the media was running wild just as John Pauly said.Everyone knows it was on every channel. After so much media and no evidence I suspect that John Pauly is only stating the truth.

    12. Mezcal on October 10th, 2005 11:28 am

ArubaTruth does not question the media coverage. The only thing they say is that it hasn’t always been accurate. The rest of the story is the opinion of John Pauly reflected in an interview he had with Alan Pergament for The Buffalo News. That has nothing to do with ArubaTruth, they do not account for every statement made by the individuals in the Strategic Communications Task Force.
You guys are getting more and more unbelievable with these kind of comments on your post. When are you going to look into the questionable behavior of these news channels? You expect ArubaTruth to do it from both sides, why don’t you start? And why does it take you days before you post my comments?

    13. John Staton on October 10th, 2005 11:43 am

With Aruba owned by drug cartels and their justice system reflective of this well know fact, we can be glad that there has been constant pressure from the foreign press. If not, even less would be known and the Van der Straaten/Van der Sloot conspiracy to destroy evidence and protect the P.I.M.P.S. gang of sexual preditors than we now know. Aruba is most concerned because the truth of what kind of society they actually have is now being realized with resulting consequences.

    14. mojo on October 10th, 2005 12:27 pm

a great example came out this weekend — dompig and beth both confirmed that the van der sloot house was NOT searched, just joran’s apartment. yet we have court tv and fox news clearly stating the opposite. this was irresponsible reporting at its worst and if these so-called journalists “queered” the investigation, i hope they’ll take some responsibility, but i doubt it.

    15. TexasRick on October 10th, 2005 12:41 pm

      Bizman,

If you believe that “John Pauly is only stating the truth” – then you have no clue what his job is.

He is a hired PR man, and his role is to say whatever his clients want him to. His job is to paint his client in the most favorable light, no matter what the truth is.

The LAST person you should be relying on for ‘truth’ is a PR man, let alone one who also represents pornographers and one who is seen happily associating with the suspected murderer/rapist in this case.

    16. Leo on October 10th, 2005 12:42 pm

I love Aruban logic. “There is no body, no evidence, what are going to do with these guys?” Like it is no big deal. The Aruban LE either don’t know how to collect evidence or in cahoots with the suspects father so they purposely destroy evidence. The judges and prosecuotrs are also in cahoots with Paulus. Yet, we are supposed to accept that the absence of evidence is some kind of proof there was no crime committed rather than being proof of a (intentionally?) bungled investigation? People just disappear into thin air sometimes – happens in every country doesn’t it?

From Day 1 there was never going to be any justice in this case because of the suspects connections with the island’s criminal justice officials.

Americans stay away from this corrupt, dangerous tourist trap. If do you decide to go there be careful about taking cab rides.

    17. commonsense on October 10th, 2005 12:49 pm

I am happy that they pointed out what an horrible drama queen Nancy Grace is. How can you take her seriously, when her motto seems to be “guilty because I say so, even if proven otherwise”. It is sad to say, but I know people who rooted for the three kids to be let go because of how over the top Nancy Grace was. She has the ability to turn people off with her sh*t eaten grin, and snarly tone.

    18. Leo on October 10th, 2005 2:44 pm

      I like Nancy Grace.

I’m glad at least one person in the media expresses outrage at way this investigation has been handled.

Greta is too dispassionate – though she has made some good points.

    19. TexasRick on October 10th, 2005 5:35 pm

Leo – Very well said. I agree with you 100%.

“Commonsense” – did you pick your alias to be ironic?

If someone actually is hoping three degenerates get away with rape and murder because they don’t like the attitude of a television talk show host, then I suggest the problem lies within the small brains of the people you know who feel this way.

    20. 10061906 on October 10th, 2005 7:56 pm

to Commonsense: I agree with you and would sugget Nancy Grace spend some money on a speech therapist. Almost all her credibility is lost once she opens her mouth.

    21. Arubaanse on October 11th, 2005 10:17 am

The media coverage has never been accurate!! I had popcorn and softdrinks ready to see some of the comments made by Faux( so I can let myself get entertain by their bullsh**). Nancy Grace is a disgrace for Journalism!!!

    22. Jay on October 11th, 2005 3:50 pm

hhhmmmm, the only one I saw running down the street from a camera crew was sweaty Paul.
