Strategic Communications Task Force of Aruba; Emergency meeting about Natalee Holloway case

From Amigoe; Spoedoverleg over kwestie-Holloway, 6 Okt, 2005, 18:44 (GMT -04:00)

(English translation, Hat Tip: Edwin)

ORANJESTAD – The government was asked for an emergency meeting by the Strategic Communications Task Force of Aruba. The escalating negative information about the Holloway case is a major subject.

Since two weeks the disappearance of Natalee Holloway is back in the American news shows. The Task Force concludes that it gives a negative turn with the lowest point the Dr. Phil show: “They started a campaign against the authorities of Aruba and Arubans as a touristic location.” Especially the overwhelming efforts of Natalee’s mother, Beth Twitty, to punish all of Aruba for what happened to her daughter, is harmful according to the Task Force.

They took this conclusion after negative polls showed that the negative media attention will damage the reputation and therefor the economy of Aruba seriously. “And the negative media attention will increase if Aruba from their side does not take any actions”, according the letter from the Task Force to the government of Aruba.

Minister Rudy Croes of Justice gave a reaction to the Task Force. He believes that the government should do a final attempt to show Twitty that Aruba offered her all possible hospitality, support and help. Unfortunately that was not enough to get her daughter back, according Croes. He suggest that if Twitty continues to boycott Aruba, he will take further steps. The Task Force did not want to take any action against Twitty because such an action would cause more media attention and will have a negative effect: “Mothers of victims are ‘holy’ for the American media.”

So do we understand that the Aruban government is proposing a kind of “final solution” of the Natalee Holloway case?

I hope Beth doesn’t go back there without personal security ….

    2. Maura on October 8th, 2005 11:18 pm

Aruba should be worried about tourism! If this is how they treat missing persons or tourists… then why go there? What if the same thing happened to you or a loved one- can you imagine going through what Beth is? Its terrible!

    3. dennisintn on October 9th, 2005 12:37 am

well, they finally got something right. the american media does consider the mothers of victims “holy”. the american public also should have been included in this statement. i noticed nothing was mentioned about solving the case because natalee holloway deserved justice. or that the guilty deserve punishment. or even that their own wives and dauhters may be in danger’s way if the guilty aren’t taken off the streets. doesn’t seem to enter their consciousness at all. they also need to be thinking about the damage the natalee and beth bashers are doing to the american opinion of arubans in general. the more i read of what these fools write on the internet, the less i think of their sense of humanity, and the more i realize how much hatred they must have of americans in general.

    4. txchic on October 9th, 2005 1:16 am

i’ll repeat again that hitting them in their pocket books seems to be the only way to get the aruban goverment to pay attention to this case.

i’d love to see them attempt to take beth twitty to court over their lack of tourism $$$. from what i recall it was the twittys who asked the alabama goverment to call off their boycott of aruba. when there was a lack of activity the twittys never went back to ask the goverment to re-instate the boycott.

she’s a mom asking for people who support her to avoid travel to aruba. i’ve noticed that she’s been very careful to avoid the word “boycott”. she’s also been very gracious about the hospitality of the aruban people.

perhaps if those arubans who were so hospitable would focus their efforts at cleaning up their democratic goverment they wouldn’t find themselves in this mess.

besides, with the gas prices taking a chunk out of american’s expendable cash they’ll have a difficult time saying that any lack of tourism isn’t due to the american economy.

    5. Stefani on October 9th, 2005 1:55 am

Perhaps Aruba should have worried from the beginning, before this got to the point where it is today. But as a Mother, I also would make a lot of noise and do whatever it took to receive an answer regarding a missing child of mine. The squeeky wheel ALWAYS get the oil !

    6. homewoodmom on October 9th, 2005 2:23 am

Rudy STILL doesn’t get it, does he? Nor does Aruba! They need to get it through their thick skulls that America DOES NOT NEED Aruba but Aruba DOES NEED America. They essentially gave van der Sloot a pass on all his criminal deeds and completely screwed up. Maybe the van der Sloots weren’t worth it, after all. Don’t blame the Twitty’s for your problems, find the nearest mirror and take a good, long look. There’s your problem!!!
Ol’ Rudy might want to re-think “action against the Twitty’s” too. Not a good plan. Believe it or not, things for Aruba could get worse.

    7. Purplasia14 on October 9th, 2005 4:10 am

I think that Aruba has a right to protect themselves. I think it is rediculous to think that they wouldnt, when their lively hood and reputations are being attacked. It is sad that people think that this article means that Aruba is bad for having meetings to decide whats best for their country. America has these types of meetings all the time, we would do anything to protect our own country. What makes us any different or better than Aruba? People come here all the time, and I am sure that on more than one occasion a tourist has lost their life while visiting our country. I am also sure that there are unsolved cases related to these tourist losing their lives as well. Hell how many unsolved cases do we have here involving our own citizens? You dont see americans voicing opinions to boycott states within our country that have these unsolved cases do you? So just how much sense does it make for americans to be shouting this boycott BS now? Law enforcement agencies can only do so much to solve these things, and noone is perfect! Everyone in the world makes mistakes!

I hope that for Aruba and the Holloways this case will be solved soon, but if it isn’t I dont think this country should suffer because of that. Beth Twitty has suffered a huge loss, but will continuing this cover-up theory/personal attack/governmental attack/ bring her daughter back? Will trying to destroy this countries lively hood help her in any way? IMO the answer to that is no. The media people who are backing this boycott stuff are only in it for the money, you can believe that for sure! I am so tired of hearing this and reading about this boycott stuff. It is just rediculous and it isnt helping anyone. In fact it may be hurting everyone involved including the Holloway family. I wonder how Natalee would feel about this? Would this be what she would want to happen? Somehow from reading all I have about her, I highly doubt she’d agree with this. JMO of course.

    8. Dutch on October 9th, 2005 5:08 am

And when does it get in your thick skulls that the Twitty’s are feeding the populair media half truths, blund lies, false accusations and are even slundering people and are getting away with it !!!

      While we’re talking, here’s something else I don’t understand …

Why can’t the two security guards who were arrested, apparently on no evidence except for the say-so of the three main suspects, bring charges against those three?

Or maybe that’s naive on my part … given the atmosphere that we are seeing in Aruba, maybe they know their own homeland and their chances for justice better than I do. Certainly it doesn’t seem that the Aruba judicial system would offer much chance of success against an insider, if the travesty of the Natalee Holloway case is any guide.

Ditto for those girls who, we were told, were ready to file complaints against van der Sloot … perhaps they’ve been scared off by the outcome of the Natalee Holloway case.

    11. jill Mccracken on October 9th, 2005 7:49 am

They gathered a task force, and this is the best conclusion they could come up with? They should know “blaming the victim” doesn’t fly with Americans. Beth is not holy, and I’ve never heard her described as such. Aruba depends on Americans for 70% of their tourist dollars. The authorities could stem the tide of a boycott, but with their attitudes, it seems they would like us to ramp it up. Any takers?

    12. cal on October 9th, 2005 8:09 am

I send my deepest sympathy and prayers to the Holloway family just as I do for any other families whom have missing loved ones. The only comfort I that I can offer is that I’m optimistic that the case will eventually be solved and Natalee will be returned home.

Similar observation – During Vietnam war I was a forward observer and on a few rescue operations. We would perform search and recuse operations for missing servicemen. Sometimes we located them and sometimes not; those we could not find were labeled as MIA (missing in action). After many years the MIA’s were returned home. The reason for the delay was the Vietnam regime in power after the war had no heart and soul towards human rights or dignity of the deceased or the living, of their own people or foreigners. After the regime change many years later a new gov’t came into power with a much different outlook toward human life and dignity.

Natalee is definetly a MIA (Missing in Aruba). – I beleive Natalee will also be found and returned home. Just maybe not with the current regime of Aruba, but maybe sometime in the future. For anything positive to happen in this case their needs to be a rigime change in Aruba; and the only ones whom can do that are the local residents or the Netherlands homeland. Thus, this is why a public boycott is being publicly initiated here in the US. We were raised and taught to stand up for our beliefs; help our fellow neighbors in distress and use what-ever resources are available. We are all aware that Beth tried patience but the gov’t of Aruba took advantage of her compassion and used it against her. So now other more stronger options are being used and implemented.

With regard to Rudy’s comments – in my opinion they are very shallow and self-centered; he doesn’t really give a darn about Beth’s misery; only about his reputation and livelyhood. And I also do not think he cares that much about the local residents – as long as he can control and manipulate them. But I also think it’s beginning to wear on him and his gov’t because now he is personally attacking Beth – usually personal attacks indicate a deep rooted failure of control of a situation.

Last note – a special thanks to the originators of scaredmonkeys.com whom traveled to Aruba and participated in the search for Natalee.

“Mother of victims are holy in the American media”…
Rudy get with the program! You are blaming Beth Twitty. You can blame yourself and Paulis vd S and the other 3 perps, your crooked justice system, your crooked judges, your crooked police chief (vd Straaten).
Aruban justice and government officials let this happen. If Aruba is perceived poorly as a tourist destination by American travelers you can look in the mirror. You underestimated the tenacity of Beth Twitty. You thought this would just go away if you appeared to make an effort to find Natalee.
Sounds like Aruba is beginning to suffer and you can thank yourselves.

    14. britt on October 9th, 2005 8:35 am

This seems to be part of the pattern. Who cares about the young woman or her family—just watch out for your own people and of course your money.
(Sorry–I’ve never been there. The whole place is getting a bad reputation courtesy of the folks in power. Hope they’ve got some way to enlighten or remove the offending coterie.)

“Especially the overwhelming efforts of Natalee’s mother, Beth Twitty, to punish all of Aruba for what happened to her daughter….”

I don’t know if they just don’t get it or if indeed they really do. Beth is not trying punish Aruba for what happened to her daughter. It’s about the obvious coverup of what happened to her daughter. She’s trying to get results, and this is one of her few remaining options. Playing nice clearly didn’t work.

    19. BRENDA on October 9th, 2005 11:16 am

ARUBA you will not get my AMERICAN dollars nor my friends nor my familys. I will pass the word around to boycott ARUBA and I will help keep the story alive because thats what NATALEE was alive when she visited your island. i will keep emailing all the talk show host and telling them to get involved. ARUBA you can’t stop an AMERICAN here in america from telling on you. I will keep telling everybody the story that natalee is still missing and ARUBA just wants your money. YOU CAN’T TOUCH THAT ARUBA you are bad boys and girls and you will be given a squeeze of your tourist dollars intill you RELEASE NATALEE and stop abuseing the twitty’s.

    20. WAYNE on October 9th, 2005 12:55 pm

MY WIFE AND I WERE THINKING OF GOING TO ARUBA, BUT NOT NOW. I AGREE THAT THE AMERICANS DOEN’T NEED ARUBA BUT ARUBA NEEDS THE AMERICAN TOURIZM, UNLESS OF COURSE THE VAN DER SLOOTS CAN MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE..HA HA

    21. Eden on October 9th, 2005 1:31 pm

The judge let the boys go free when they could have at least charged Joran, (and/or the Kalpoe’s) with rape.
They have statements that show at least that..and yet Joran is off to Holland.. w/ NO travel restrictions!!!!
What a slap in the face!

If the Aruban officials are mad at anyone.. they should be mad at the judge who allowed this to take place..and they should re-arrest them.

.. I also like their comments on how this story is now ‘back in the news’ ..
Had it not been for Katrina, it would not have left the news.. they thought they could just sweep this under the rug when the media wasn’t looking..
That goes to show what a determined parent will do to at least find her daughter’s body and bring her home!

    22. Lori on October 9th, 2005 2:02 pm

This tragedy could have happened anywhere, even our own towns. That is not the point. The point is how the disappearance was handled, especially in those early days.

My husband and I visited Aruba earlier this year. We will not return.

    23. Had Enough on October 9th, 2005 2:17 pm

      Finally…..
The fair people of Aruba have finally run out of patience and are refusing to continue to extend the welcome mat to Beth and the Twit Camp and the problem is ????
Arubans have helped search, given free meals, housing, vehicles, etc., and now Beth expects them all to stand by with smiles while she announces a boycott of their fine island. Beth is the one who should be locked up. Not sure if it’s a post traumatic syndrome kicking in or her previously diagnosed mental condition rearing it’s ugly head but all her lies and bazaar behaviors indicate she’s doing downward spiral. Watch for the upcoming implosion, probably will be broadcast by her buddies at faux news, stay tuned!

    24. Cheyenne on October 9th, 2005 2:49 pm

I understand the position of the Arubans, they are simply being blackballed by the Twittys and the American public. Our logic and justice seems to be punish ALL for the sins of a few. Sounds typical actually. But I think they need to keep abreast of polls done in America because many of them show a much different stance about boycotting Aruba. Even Dave Holloway thinks it is foolish and I agree. Tourism has risen 10% since Natalee disappeared. So that is a strong indicator that all mind are not in agreement with the boycott.

We surely must look like the NUTS of the world to all our neighbors…we now have a talk show host that is holding potential evidence as hostage due to ratings.

I think it would behoove us to look within our own country and try to shore up our image…..not those in Aruba.

I hope that the Prosecutor remains firm in her position. This is not a case about ratings although it has turned out to be.

    25. iwabwu on October 9th, 2005 2:53 pm

Everyone has to search their own values to determine when and if they choose to go to Aruba.

I still find it amazing that the main players in the search for Natalee Holloway have not stepped aside.

Paulus van der Sloot, father of Joran, worked in the prosecutors office for several years. He was a judge in training on the island, and certainly would know the police involved in the investigation, as well as those in the prosecutors office, and judiciary.

With this in mind, how could they have ensured a fair and impartial investigation with regard to Joran and the Kalpoe brothers? Will we ever know what happened after Natalee stepped off the curb in front of C&C and into the car of Deepak?

    26. NYSOM on October 9th, 2005 5:24 pm

IT TOOK A TASK FORCE TO FIGURE THAT OUT???? And they’re worried about us giving their island a negative image?

I’d love to know what Rudy Croes plans to do to show that the government offered Beth all possible hospitality, support and help….cover up the cover up?

I love the last comment “Mothers of victims are ‘holy’ for the American media.” Yes, how appalling, we Americans care about our citizens!

    27. icey on October 9th, 2005 8:01 pm

Rudy…. Take whatever action you want. Show the world how good your LE is! Were waiting!!!! Your island task force is a joke and everyone off the island can easily see that. The use of the words” “task force” in and of itself is laughable.

Get your silly butt back to work, Put on your big hat and ride your police force into the ground, dismiss/fire/jail the LE or Govt clowns that made a fool of YOUR island and get some honesty back into this investigation.

ALE was tested here and so far they failed. Rudy… You DO NOT have anything to complain about in regards to the negataive publiciy in this case. YOUR LE blew it from the start and certian members should have stepped aside when it was apparent that the son of a govt worker was involved!!! ALE set themselfs up for whatever embarassment is coming their way.

BTW…. The so called “boycott” was already in place WAY WAY WAY before BT or the Alabama government metioned anything about staying away from the island. It’s an obvious conclusion to those of us in the States that NH’s disappearance was not taken seriously at the start and that your ALE is fairly easy to confuse and it’s possible ale is corrupt!

We don’t need any further reason to stay away if we so choose. It’s no so much the crime, it’s the way it was handled. Even your so called “chief prosecuter” said at the start “oh she will show up at CnC’s for “ladies night in a couple of days”. That’s terrible insight and investigative work when we are talking about a missing teenaged tourist who just missed a plane!!!! Couple that with other statements like “can’t go in there like cowboys” and the possible “pvds did’nt let me search his main house” and it’s no wonder aruba is seen in a negative light.

Any attack on NH’s family by anyone in aruba or the netherlands will certianly get your island the kind of publicity and reputation that you DO NOT WANT! Solve the crime & Get someone in jail & get some positive publicity for once, You know, EARN IT!

We were there in July. I have a 18 and 17 year old. 18 is a boy and 17 a girl. They met kids at the pool and walked the beach at night. Met some great kids!! Went to the restaurant on the beach near the fisherman’s hut…had the netting over and pool tables etc…. My son had two security guards/ in that vincinity and also the hotel areas/ approach him and offer him any type of drugs he may want. No wonder it’s a happy island. Come on Aruba….come clean. I feel for the Holloway’s.

The whole Aruba investigation is a mess! I just dont understand how they could do this to a young beautiful woman and her family and friends. I dont even have a clue who the holloway’s are but I love that family. I just want you to know that Joran, DeePak, and Satish will soon be brought to justice. If you need anything, not even if you need anything, I would like to help somehow. Have faith everyone, this is far from over…And JORAN…Enjoy smokin your pot and getting all tipsy there in holland…we are coming for you, (edit).

    31. shirlnobl on October 11th, 2005 12:02 am

Maybe the cheif prosecuter and PVDS were involed with each other and she was helpping him out with joran.maybe that way she has taking so many vacatins to holland. She is so involded with this. And also girls night out C&C.evidentence going missing and her hand delvering the tape with the hair on it to holland. And it just come to be not Natalee’s this don’t suprise me at all.Anytime a search was made by USA.She was there and would only let them seach where she wanted them to.All the evidendence was a big cover-up.The police to the judge and prosecution. So it’s time you get a new party to investigate the crime.
