ORANJESTAD, Aruba – Three men who said they dropped off an Alabama teenager at her hotel have emerged as “the most important lead” in the honor student’s disappearance on this Dutch Caribbean island, police said Saturday.

Police, Dutch troops and hundreds of volunteers scouring coastline and beaches for six days have found no trace of Natalee Holloway, 18, and a Mississippi native.

      THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL !!!

      Fox News declares:

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Reports conflicted Saturday in developments of the Alabama honor student who has been missing in Aruba for almost two weeks.

Aruban Minister of Justice Edward Croes (search) told FOX News Natalee Holloway, who was on vacation with friends as a graduation trip when she disappeared, was confirmed dead and that authorities know the location of her body.

However, the mother of the 17-year-old told FOX News authorities had not yet contacted them with this information. Croes also said that Natalee’s father, who is divorced from her mother, was with investigators looking for the body.

These reports came after significant, yet at times conflicting, developments with the five suspects being detained in the case.

One of the young men detained admitted “something bad happened” to the woman after they took her to the beach, a police officer said, while prosecutors said the investigation was at a crucial point.

But prosecutors refused to comment on the statement by Deputy Police Commissioner Gerold Dompig (search), who told The Associated Press that the man who made that admission was leading police to the scene. He refused to identify which of the three young men who took Holloway to a northern beach the night she went missing made the statement.

arubagirl–if i were the gaurds lawyer I’d be nice nice and no waves, just get clients out then prove wrong doing if any and go from there….The gaurds would have no chance at a lawsuit maybe if this did’t go so big and so long esp if they only had a joint to hold them 8 days plus more , and at the same time let the guys with evidence on car go you know??

msnbc had a top DEA on saying yes aruba is a very safe place and people should continue to enjoy the island. GOOD.

Government officials in Aruba are on the radio condemming Fox News for their reporting and requesting all journalists to cooperate with authorities and not report rumors. The Justice Minister is denying having told any American reported that Natalee Holloway is dead.

I know people in Aruba are anxious to get some closure on this tragedy and return to normal.

One thing the authorities might consider, there are many people in the US of African-American descent who also go on vacation.

Letting Micky and Abraham return home to their families immediately, as well as apologizing to them and compensating them for their pain and suffering would be a terrific way to counteract concerns that would-be tourists of color might have and affirm that the island welcomes all people.

There are so many conflicting reports, that one would go crazy if you heard all of them. I would think that the family has been privy to a lot of info that has not been told to the public. They have probably learned many new things about their daughter that parents don’t necessarily have a need to know like kissing a boy or drinking too much.

    71. Sarah on June 11th, 2005 4:29 pm

Yeah, or taking x. Do you think she was going to go back and share these types of things with her family? I imagine it is akin to, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” only this time it is Aruba.

    72. friend of mickey john on June 11th, 2005 4:29 pm

Rob- it’s likely that is the plan until a body is in a coroners office.

While Fox News is reporting that the focus of the search seems to have turned back to the lighthouse area, another source has confirmed that Noraima Peters, lawyer for one of the security guards arrested earlier has confirmed that Joran Van der Sloot, one of the three boys also arrested has confessed to something “big” but the attorney would not elaborate.

Back to Fox, they claim that behind the scenes reports suggest one of the boys, most likely Van der Sloot is talking to authorities now and providing details as to what happened to Natalee Holloway.

I have to agree with deputy. When I was a senior in high school back in 1991, we took a senior cruise to the Bahamas. It was a “booze cruise, ” to say the least. Although I was one of the “smart” kids, I too, was there to have a good time and drank way too much. One evening a group of friends left the ship to go to a bar (with no chaperones). An older man starting buying drinks for me and my friends. We were so young and naive, we accepted them. Later, the man tried to convince me to leave with him in his limo. I declined the offer, saying I was staying with my friends. He became angry, told me I was stupid, and grabbed my arm very tightly – tight enough to hurt. Although I had been drinking heavily, I still had enough wits about me to not leave with a stranger. I may not be here today had I left with that psycho. Even though this was 14 years ago, I still remember exactly what this person looked like.

I am now married with children, and I will NEVER let any of my children go on a trip like this unless I am there as a chaperone, in the true sense of the word.

American press misleading, no confession say Aruba police
      by Norman ‘Gus’ Thomas
Caribbean Net News Senior Regional Correspondent
      E-mail: rc@caribbeannetnews.com
      Saturday, June 11, 2005
ORANJESTAD, Aruba: Law enforcement officials in Aruba are calling recent reports coming out of the USA in relation to the disappearance of an Alabama teenager as “untrue and misleading.” 18-year-old Natalee Holloway vanished May 29 after leaving an Oranjestad nightclub.

According to US reports, police in Aruba arrested a man on Saturday morning, after one of a trio that was previously held reportedly told police “something bad happened to her”.

CNN’s 2:00 pm report on Saturday stated that a senior police officer had told them that one of the three men arrested had confessed to killing Halloway.

Aruba police told Caribbean Net News Saturday that they have been engaged in an unsuccessful island-wide search for Holloway, who had come to the island with 124 other students from the USA to celebrate their graduation from Mountain Brook High School.

Caribbean Net News contacted CNN Headline News in Atlanta who said that they have reporters on the ground in Aruba and were adamant that they are sticking by their story.

However, officials in Aruba maintain that no confession was made and there has been no other arrest apart from the five made earlier.

According to one US report, police this morning visited a home on the outskirts of the capital city of Oranjestad and were later seen coming from the house with a young man wearing handcuffs, but the Aruba police have also denied this.

However, police did confirm to Caribbean Net News that, of the arrested trio, two are brothers and hail from Suriname while the other is a 17-year-old Dutchman who is the son of a top member of Aruba’s legal circle.

When the story first broke, police also detained two former security guards who have maintained that they are innocent. They have not been charged and their continued detention has sparked simmering racial overtones.

Since Halloway’s disappearance, island-wide searches by Aruban police, Dutch marines, the FBI and scores of volunteer islanders and tourists still continue on a daily basis.

Nelson Oduber, the island’s Prime Minister in speaking on national radio Friday night hinted that he was deeply concerned over the negative effect the Halloway matter would have on the island’s tourism product and its 97,000 people, who depend heavily on tourism.

Meanwhile, a high court judge flown in from a neighbouring island was due to convene a “hearing” at 2:00 pm Saturday to determine whether officials can continue to hold the three suspects in prison without charge as the investigations continue.

Some thoughts: At 18, I would have felft myself old enough to go away whether my parents wanted me to or not. There are no perfect places in this world. I lived in and sailed the Islands for 15 years. I know people who have suffered great tragic crimes. I did not suffer even one. Not one person ever deserved to be harmed. Perhaps I am just lucky, but I do try to know where I am and try to stay safe, not just in the Islands, but here Stateside too. Sometimes one is just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I believe that tourists have a notion about the islands in general that is less than realistic. No matter where you go you will find people that will be willing to commit crimes. There will always be a few oddballs that aren’t well wrapped in the head. Aruba is a beautiful place. Most of the islands are beautiful. On each of these islands you will find people that have a genuine love of visitors, some that smile and make nice but still dislike you for their own reasons and others that are just hostile. You may spend a week or two there and feel that you know the place, but I assure you that you no nothing until you live on that rock. We are all in a hurry to know what happened to Natalee, but you must remember that you are dealing with people that live on Island time and have an island mentality. That is not a slur. I try to save my island culture wherever I am. But, it is a different culture. It can be very frustrating dealing with bureaucrats in the islands. These are their islands and it is up to them to decide how and when things will be done. Maddening maybe, but a fact. They do not do things wrongly, just differently. Example, some islands may drive on the left. I have heard tourists exclaim, oh you drive on the wrong side of the road! Not really, we just do not do it the way you do. Aruba may not be doing it the American way, but they are getting it done, albeit on island time, in their own way. They have tried to accomadate the press and the world which is breathing down their backs. Natalee may be alive or she may be dead, they are trying to do all they can to resolve this. I do believe that. God Bless Natalee and her family. . Sorry if this sounds like a lecture, just some thoughts.

    187. golden on June 11th, 2005 5:05 pm

He’s just bring this whole “I’m here now and this sh it is going to stop.” vibe.

    188. Jim on June 11th, 2005 5:06 pm

Hate to discredit things here, but the Aruban Police seem to be running around like a chicken with their heads cut off. They should turn this over to the FBI as they have no business investigating a high profile murder, or a traffic ticket for that matter. The way Aruba has handled this is pretty disgusting and I will never step foot on the island again.

    189. cautivo on June 11th, 2005 5:06 pm

Crimes happen everywhere. And there are varying business interests and prominent families everywhere.

I wonder if it would be better, from the public relations standpoint, to just go with the straight story as opposed to focusing so much effort on public relations concerns.

In some ways, it seems to be leaning toward the counter-productive side.

Forgive my plain speech, but given a choice between an island where a crime occurred, and an island where a murder and a lot of subsequent questionable activity surrounding the crime occurred, I would choose island A.

It would be very unfair to blame an entire island because a crime took place. Americans especially are not in a favorable position to cast these stones!

And the media can be annoying but the govt is the authority and can ban them. If they do not ban them, talking to them would, in my opinion, be more beneficial than not talking to them.

    190. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 5:06 pm

No, the 3 guys who Natalee got in the car with. The two guards aren’t scheduled to come before a judge yet. The lawyers for the guards were going to ask the judge to release their clients, but I have no idea if this happened and what the result turned out to be.

      Hey, Arubans…

What are people saying about these three guys (aside from the did they/didn’t they questions)? I mean, don’t you think that, if in fact they have confessed and they killed her, that most Arubans are going to be PISSED at them? I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes. Look at what turmoil they’ve caused on your usually-quiet and laid back island.

Just wondering if people are saying anything.

    202. nancy_drew on June 11th, 2005 5:12 pm

It seems one of the biggest problems is the Arubian government is not able to handle the intense international media pressure AND they don’t feel public disclosure is necessary. While invetigative details should be kept private to protect the case in this country public information officers give routine detailed updates in a high profile case…if only to appease the media.

They just reported the information officers are from all walks of life and aren’t part of the law enforcement staff. Yikes.

What a mess for the family and those friends and loved ones watching and waiting for any bit of info.

    205. Tom on June 11th, 2005 5:13 pm

You are probably correct Gabriel. The media in the US is so competitive and that leads to significant errors. Typically though they are good at attribution,

I do know heads are rolling at the major networks if it comes out that the reporters have lied about the attribution.

I think the systems of justice are so different that the US media does not know how to handle it.

    206. Sarah on June 11th, 2005 5:13 pm

correct me if i’m wrong (i’m sure you will)lol… but, wasn’t it reported a few days ago that there were only 2 top officials from aruba that were to report to the press and anything from anyone else would be unofficial?

    216. golden on June 11th, 2005 5:16 pm

Geraldo is just obnoxious and strong arms his way into situations. But like I said in an earlier post, there was a time, long ago when he was somewhat credible.

    217. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 5:17 pm

Well, I would say that he be tried in the States, and the media circus goes on there, and when the sentence is rendered, bring him here, convert the sentence to Aruban standards and let him sit it out here. It happened once before. Granted, the crime was committed on American soil.

From what I have seen of your Justice System. I think you will do a fine job prosecuting the responsible party right there.

    219. Nate on June 11th, 2005 5:18 pm

Aren’t journalists supposed to be obnoxious and strong armed?…at least that’s always been my impression…

    220. Gabriel Leo on June 11th, 2005 5:18 pm

Believe you mean I they are found Guilty. They will have hell to pay. If not by the Justice it will be by the LOCALS. This is a small Island. Arubans are Proud People. And Never forget who damaged the reputation of the Island.

Soon this whole case will come to an end.

    221. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 5:18 pm

I think so too Lydia, but will we have to endure endless nights of Nancy Grace and Geraldo etc etc etc?

    222. golden on June 11th, 2005 5:18 pm

I feel sorry for Aruba right about now. This case is not coming to an end. The madness has only just begun.

Yeah, I’m no law enforcment expert, but I think the crime has to be committed on American soil in order for the individual to be tried here. Too bad.

Yes they are to a certain degree. Geraldo, will exploit this family’s pain for ratings. Her dad is very vulnerable now, as is the entire family. I hate to see them get pimped by Geraldo.
