Kelsey_Smith_truck

Overland Park Police public information office Jim Weaver talks about the mid 70′s dark Chevrolet pick up truck, shown on screen, they are looking for in connection with the abduction of 18-year-old Kelsey Smith during a news conference Tuesday, June 5, 2007 in Overland Park, Kan. A surveillance video shows the missing teen being forced into her car at a Target store where she had stopped for an errand over the weekend, police said.

      Carpe, excellent work, as usual.
Bet the guy is a repeater. This is the new attack, catch them going in the car.

I think our schools should be providing a class on self defense and awareness…this should be a mandantory class.

Look our families are being hunted like prey….teach kids how to defend.

    8. Mike on June 6th, 2007 8:52 am

How many old 70′s dark color chevy pickups could there be in Overland Park?

    9. Katablog.com on June 6th, 2007 9:01 am

This abduction is scary. OakPark Mall is in a good area, there is an extreme amount of traffic around since it sits right on the corner with busy smaller shopping areas on the three other corners. It’s broad daylight at 6:00pm in KS and Kelsey even parked very close to the store.

It leaves one realizing that you must ALWAYS have your wits about you. I know I tend to be careful at dusk and in the dark, and also in secluded areas but in broad daylight in a very high traffic area, I could easily be caught off my guard.

    10. stoney on June 6th, 2007 10:02 am

In the video they first focus on on one car closer to the store then after the tuck rides bay they move over to another car in another lane.

    11. Libby on June 6th, 2007 10:16 am

I pray she is okay. I am worried though. I don’t have a good feeling about this. She has to be within a 2 hour radius. She is walking into Target at 6:55 p.m. I can’t remember what time she was seen leaving Target. It couldn’t have been much later because she was supposed to meet her boyfriend at 7:20. Her car was found in Macy’s parking lot at 9:17 p.m. The truck is seen leaving Target’s parking lot at 9:30 p.m. I’m thinking he either God forbid killed her or hurt her and left her somewhere within that 2 hour radius or he took her somewhere and is holding her there. Her dad is a police officer and has been for 16 years. I am wondering if they are looking at persons he may have arrested or ticked off.

    12. Mimi on June 6th, 2007 10:17 am

Ok maybe I am losing it but it looked like the video moved to a totally different car when it showed the “activity” going on. Is it just me?

    13. Mimi on June 6th, 2007 10:19 am

Oh sorry I just saw that comment before mine about the same thing, so I guess it’s not just me. I was also wondering why nobody saw anything. It is daytime and there are cars and people out and nobody saw or heard anything? That’s weird!!!

    14. Brie on June 6th, 2007 10:32 am

He was probably stalking her, if you notice, he leaves the store without any packages. Hopefully the video cameras in the store will show us more. The punishment on these types of crime should be ever so severe.

    15. Libby on June 6th, 2007 10:59 am

I think he was stalking her too. The truck in question pulled in directly after hers. So, he may have been following her. He walks in directly after her and leaves just before her…with nothing. He probably watched her throughout Target, watched her checking out, left the building just before she did and waited for her.

My question is the same as everyone elses on here…it is broad daylight. I would like to think that I would take notice to a woman being shoved into a car by a man. It doesn’t make sense…especially if there is a struggle.

    16. Richard on June 6th, 2007 12:00 pm

Libby, I was once mugged in Washington, D.C., when I lived there. The whole thing was over quickly, and I was coming home on foot from a bar. The only significance of the incident was that I still remember that it happened so fast that it seemed unreal.

I can imagine that for this girl, the sudden intrusion of crime into a normal day in an environment where she probably wasn’t on guard happened so quickly that it also seemed “unreal” to her. Often a determined predator can take the advantage of someone just because he’s prepared and has planned things out, and she hasn’t.

Let’s hope for the best here.

With all the other technical advances that have been made, why can’t the images on these security tapes be improved?

    17. Libby on June 6th, 2007 12:21 pm

Wow, Richard, I am sorry to hear that. Glad you survived and that you are okay.

I just hope and pray for the best with Kelsey.

    18. Brenda on June 6th, 2007 12:21 pm

      Richard,

Some reports I have read state forensics is enhancing the video. This takes time and is normal procedure in such situations where the picture is grainy.

      Ms. UE,

As for the schools teaching our kids about self defense…with all due respect the parents should be doing this. Especially the fathers. My dad made sure I was well aware of keeping my guard up at all times. Even in my own front yard! I realize not all kids have their fathers, or a step-father around to guide them, but remember School House Rock clips on Saturday mornings? They taught kids safety and proper English skills. Why not bring that kind of thing back? One could be engineered to teach children about the danger of not only strangers, but people they know who can take advantage. We must be careful how much teaching outside of the books we allow our schools to do with our kids or they (government) becomes the authority, not the parent(s).

Either way, this is a terrible situation and reminds me of Dru Sjordin. So sad that mankind has lost itself to being nothing more than an animal in so many cases…..

Kelsey’s parents: don’t recognize man in videotape

      Associated Press – June 6, 2007 9:04 AM ET

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) – The parents of missing Overland Park teenager Kelsey Smith say they don’t recognize the man shown in a surveillance video taken at a Target store.

Greg and Missy Smith tell CBS’ “The Early Show” this morning that no one in their family knows the young, goateed man videotaped leaving the store moments before Kelsey was abducted.

Police say the man had not been identified and is not considered a suspect. But he’s wanted for questioning in case he saw something the night Kelsey disappeared or has information that could help investigators.

Last night police released new surveillance tape showing a 1970s-model Chevy pickup that they believe was involved in Kelsey’s disappearance Saturday. They earlier released video showing a woman they believe is Smith being forced into her car.

      On the Net:

    21. Richard on June 6th, 2007 12:33 pm

Libby … with regard to the mugging, all I had was $3. At the time I had no car and no credit cards.

It happened four doors from where I was living … half an hour later the cops came by. I was asked how much I lost, and replied, “Three dollars.”

He started laughing (this was in the 1970s), and then said, “If that’s all you had, you’re lucky you didn’t get a knife in the back because they were angry.”

No harm done, though, and it was educational.

Let’s hope for the best for Kelsey.

    22. Miss-Underestimated on June 6th, 2007 1:02 pm

      Brenda

It’s a totally different world today. The predators are absolutely bold. Our schools here now have drills for intruders, something I never had to deal with.

Just as there is DARE, there should be a mandantory self defense class, to replace the lack luster PE.

    23. katablog.com on June 6th, 2007 1:20 pm

KS & MO police are now looking in Grandview. This has something to do with getting pings from her cell phone as family members tried to call her on Saturday night.

Hate to bring Aruba into every conversation but the KC police are showing what an investigation looks like. It’s incredible the technology they are using.

Someone knows this piece of dirt. His picture is very clear and not too many 1970 GMC pickups around that it wouldn’t be recognize immediately. Turn the turd in. He may be a suspect in another missing girl case too. Next time it might be your daughter.

I don’t feel good about this either….that she will be found alive. That video sets the timeline which is very very helpful in how far this guy could get and bring her car back across from Target.

This guy seems to be scanning the parking lot as he leaves the store where everyone else leaving the store is looking straight ahead.

The first video is confusing to me as it trains on one car then jumps to the next and the blur of contact with Kelsey is all i can see. I did hear that Target tech employee’s aided in the video enhancement kidnapping of Dru Sjdean (sp?) a couple of years ago. She was found dead and the killer was a recently released sex predator, who was sentenced to death earlier this year.

My prayers go out to her and her family.

    26. mayan_moons on June 6th, 2007 1:50 pm

Hey i just looked at the video again and it looked as if someone did rush up on her then ran back and rushed up AGAIN! ANyone else see that or am i crazy? (don’t answer that…the crazy part lol)

    27. Brenda on June 6th, 2007 2:56 pm

Miss UE…yes, I realize your reasons for thinking the schools should be involved, but drills for intruders is not something that would be taught by a parent, so there the school should be involved. DARE…since kids get most of their drugs at school, that is OK too. When it comes to self-defense, this is most likely to happen outside of the school unless we are speaking of student on student violence.

Yes, we need a solution, but both women AND men need to realize we are facing evil and since our schools kicked God out over 30 years ago, they have no business teaching how to confront real evil. If taught at school, self defense will wind up being used between the students more than against an attacker. Mark my words….

All that said, at least I will admit that we have alot of problems and the destruction of the family is the core reason. If these men who attack young women had been raised with Love, they would not be so full of hate and anger to do this. Breakdown of the family unit is the problem…not the fact the schools are not teaching something.

Who is that guy?? Somebody’s got to know!

    36. Richard on June 6th, 2007 3:38 pm

Well, God rest her soul and console her parents (to the degree possible). Think: less than 24 hours ago she was still alive and making plans …

Jesus, what in hell is so wrong?

    37. Katablog.com on June 6th, 2007 3:40 pm

They have found a body and it is in the area where they last found pings from her phone, but there is NO confirmation that it is Kelsey. Yes, it sounds like it may indeed be, but let’s not have the “mis-information” and retraction that we heard in another case.

They also stopped a young man in a older model pick-up with a goatee but released him – which means they didn’t have a reason at this time to hold him.

It appears the news conference will continue to be scheduled for 5:00pm but there is talk that it might be changed to 4:00pm with an announcement to volunteers in the next 30 minutes.

Anyway it goes, Kelsey’s family needs prayers.

    38. mayan_moons on June 6th, 2007 3:47 pm

      Hey Vicki!

Yeah you can see how i feel about these punks in post 35….this guy was SOO brazen Vicki!

OMG i just heard that a 15 year old girl was found today in a basement like room in Vermont (i think), she’s been in that room for 2 YEARS guys!

      wow…

    39. Richard on June 6th, 2007 3:51 pm

At least in this country, someone will be held responsible for putting out the official truth and ensuring that it is just that.

We all remember the horrible mishap of the Sago miners, where someone announced (having heard it on the media, if I remember) that all of them made it through all right. The cheers of the families rang out.

Then they got the official news … just the reverse.

    40. Katablog.com on June 6th, 2007 3:51 pm

Additional activity in the area makes it more apparent that the body found is Kelsey. Volunteers have been called back from the field and asked to wait, Kelsey’s family is reported to be headed home.

    41. Brenda on June 6th, 2007 3:52 pm

Dear Vickie…I agree 100%. Take our street and lives back and deal with the evil of society as we deal with any dangerous/deadly animal. Put them out of OUR misery…

    44. Libby on June 6th, 2007 3:56 pm

Yea, Fox’s internet site…which I was looking at first, said it is Kelsey’s body. The Fox news team says it is not yet confirmed. Given the fact that they traced her cell phone to that area, more than likely it is. However, there is another missing teenage girl in the area as well. Either way, someone has lost their life for no reason. How awful. God be with the family.

    45. Maggie on June 6th, 2007 3:58 pm

    48. Libby on June 6th, 2007 4:06 pm

#39, Richard, I remember that with regard to the Sago Miners. I watched that very closely and I was so happy when they made that statement…then to find out differently. It hurt me and I didn’t even know the men. I can’t even imagine the family and the pain it caused for them.

You are right as far as justice here though. It will be nothing like Natalee and the blatant cover up in Aruba. From the time they realized Kelsey was missing, it was on. The technology they used was wonderful. If they had used any sort of technology what so ever other than sticks and blind dogs in Aruba, I think they would have found Natalee. She may not have been alive but they would have at least found her to bring home and the family would have closure.

Glad he’s finally in custody!! I hate this guy already.

(The missing girl who has been found in a basement is in CT not Vermont.)

    53. Maggie on June 6th, 2007 4:35 pm

Very sad news on this case.. this just makes me so sad. Perhaps it’s a combination of seeing so many young women’s lives destroyed for some freaks 5 minutes of sickness and all the bs in Natalee’s case.

I watched Kelsey’s father on the news a few nights ago. He is a retired officer of the law. He said he taught all of his kids how to fight back if this ever happened. So I’m sure she put up a big fight. She had bought a graduation present and was going to a graduation party sat. night with her bf when she was abducted in daylight. You can see other people walking and standing in the parking lot when it took place.

I lost a brother when he was 20 after 2 bouts of rheumatic fever and it left him with a bad heart. 2 of my brothers who were very close to him, were lost .. My mother was devastated. Every time these crimes happen I think back to how hard it was for my mother to cope. She told us all through life, if she lived through that and made it, she could make it through anything. You never recover from losing a child. You go on and do what you have to, but you never recover.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family. There are no words. Also to Tim Miller and his group, I’m positive this is devastating for them also.

If it turns out true, a man with a long criminal record, once again we are left wondering why he was out walking the streets. Hopefully people who like to blame victims instead of the creeps will see,, this happened in daylight right in front of Target.
A predator is always 20 steps ahead of their innocent victims. Stop blaming the victims and get these creeps off the street. They have stolen far too many of our young children’s lives.

      This just makes me sick…

    54. Miss-Underestimated on June 6th, 2007 5:12 pm

Oh, how sad, I pray for Kelsey’s family. Kelsey was just starting life. How sad, this is terrible. Pray for her family.

“Pending completion of a forensics examination, we have reason to believe we have found Kelsey Smith,” Overland Police Chief John Douglass said during a press conference Wednesday. “I promised them [the family] we will continue every effort to solve this case … and to bring her killer to justice.”

But despite reports that said otherwise, Douglass said police do not have a firm suspect at this point. They are talking to several people regarding Smith’s death, he said, but none are “persons of interest” or a “suspect.”

“To be absolutely clear, we are talking to numerous people right now … but I’m not ready to identify any of them as our ‘person of interest,’” Douglass said.

“The case is not over,” he continued. “We still need the public’s cooperation to close this case and bring those responsible for Kelsey’s death to justice.”

So very sad. This world is really making me pissed off. But hey, at least in this case the police got out there and worked their butts off and the news media has done a wonderful job for the family also. This is the way it’s suppose to work when some dirtbag abducts and kills your daughter.

That image if the suspect is SO clear that they will find that person.

    56. Joe on June 6th, 2007 5:43 pm

This is THE MOST Brazen abductions we’ve ever seen in broad daylight like this. I hope they clear up that video to get a better look at the actual contact going on at the driver’s side door.

      I agree Joe.

    59. Richard on June 6th, 2007 6:40 pm

Let’s hope they do the following:

      1. Apprehend a suspect (assuming there’s only one).
      2. Establish his guilt in a fair and SPEEDY trial.
      3. Sentence him to death by firing squad (if the law allows).
      4. Ask for volunteers for said squad.

At that point … I’m heading to Kansas.

    60. Miss-Underestimated on June 6th, 2007 10:26 pm

Fox claims since he crossed state lines, it is federal and he get the death penalty.

    61. maryd on June 6th, 2007 10:34 pm

There should be mandatory castration for these predators, no anestesia. Than we can talk death penalty.

    62. Brenda on June 7th, 2007 7:53 am

      Ms. UE,

I certainly agree with you on that, hope he gets death. I understand Kansas does not have death penalty, so his crossing state line is going to be good for the family getting justice.

More for you too….I live in VA and grew up in Tampa, so I read TBO online every day. They had an article in there this morning regarding new software being used in the libraries to warn/teach children of preditors.

I think this is ok because the child can research on their own and we must remember that some kids are being sexually abused and being in a class speaking about this could be dangerous for that child. MOST NEVER tell until later when it is within family, so it could bring false guilt to them. Delicate situation indeed, but thought you’d find this article interesting as it is close to your ideas for this.
