The Washington Post Spanks Nancy Pelosi

Last week we mentioned how Nancy Pelosi was try playing politics with troop funding and then racing off to meet the enemy the Syrians. We received numerous comments saying how Republicans were on the trip and that we were way ahead of ourselves in criticizing Pelosi.

Well, if that is the case, then the Washington Post must have been infiltrated by Right Wing Zealots and taken over the editorial page. The Speakers disgraceful attempts at shuttle diplomacy are showing the world what a lightweight she is and also how dangerous the Democratic Speaker of the House can be when she tries to participate in international discussions.

With terms such as Pratfall, ludicrous, foolish, Pelosi has shown that she has visions of grandeur way beyond her capabilities. A champaign ego on a beer intellect.

And you know if Jimmy Carter is backing the trip it has to be a complete mess.

Pratfall in Damascus
Nancy Pelosi’s foolish shuttle diplomacy

HOUSE SPEAKER Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) offered an excellent demonstration yesterday of why members of Congress should not attempt to supplant the secretary of state when traveling abroad. After a meeting with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, Ms. Pelosi announced that she had delivered a message from Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that “Israel was ready to engage in peace talks” with Syria. What’s more, she added, Mr. Assad was ready to “resume the peace process” as well. Having announced this seeming diplomatic breakthrough, Ms. Pelosi suggested that her Kissingerian shuttle diplomacy was just getting started. “We expressed our interest in using our good offices in promoting peace between Israel and Syria,” she said.

Only one problem: The Israeli prime minister entrusted Ms. Pelosi with no such message. “What was communicated to the U.S. House Speaker does not contain any change in the policies of Israel,” said a statement quickly issued by the prime minister’s office. In fact, Mr. Olmert told Ms. Pelosi that “a number of Senate and House members who recently visited Damascus received the impression that despite the declarations of Bashar Assad, there is no change in the position of his country regarding a possible peace process with Israel.” In other words, Ms. Pelosi not only misrepresented Israel’s position but was virtually alone in failing to discern that Mr. Assad’s words were mere propaganda.

Ms. Pelosi was criticized by President Bush for visiting Damascus at a time when the administration — rightly or wrongly — has frozen high-level contacts with Syria. Mr. Bush said that thanks to the speaker’s freelancing Mr. Assad was getting mixed messages from the United States. Ms. Pelosi responded by pointing out that Republican congressmen had visited Syria without drawing presidential censure. That’s true enough — but those other congressmen didn’t try to introduce a new U.S. diplomatic initiative in the Middle East. “We came in friendship, hope, and determined that the road to Damascus is a road to peace,” Ms. Pelosi grandly declared.

Never mind that that statement is ludicrous: As any diplomat with knowledge of the region could have told Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Assad is a corrupt thug whose overriding priority at the moment is not peace with Israel but heading off U.N. charges that he orchestrated the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri. The really striking development here is the attempt by a Democratic congressional leader to substitute her own foreign policy for that of a sitting Republican president. Two weeks ago Ms. Pelosi rammed legislation through the House of Representatives that would strip Mr. Bush of his authority as commander in chief to manage troop movements in Iraq. Now she is attempting to introduce a new Middle East policy that directly conflicts with that of the president. We have found much to criticize in Mr. Bush’s military strategy and regional diplomacy. But Ms. Pelosi’s attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it is foolish. via washingtonpost.com.

Just another pipsqueak trying to generate favorable media coverage. The Middle East regimes, which have seen people come and go for thousands of years, must laugh themselves silly every time the latest American politician arrives in town with a “Here I am to save the world” banner flying.

How many peace missions have there been to the Middle East?

And are we any closer to peace now than we ever were?

A very SAD thing for the first woman speaker to come out like this she will make it bad on any woman that follow because she has played right into the hands of those men that feel that a woman cannot do this type of high level deplomocy.
OML what an arrogant ,stupid woman this lady is she should stand right beside Hillery as these two are cut of the same cloth and together they will set womens rights back a hundred years sad but true .

    11. kay zee ess on April 5th, 2007 1:36 pm

On a serious note, praise and kudos to those Republican congressmen with enough foresight and courage to realize that, in this instance at any rate, diplomacy is needed regards to Syria.

That country has, in the not to distant past, helped us in our fight against terrorism(look it up) and while we may suspect that they are giving aid to Hezbollah et al shutting them out or putting them in coventry is no, repeat no solution to this problem. I am not discounting the seriousness of Syrias’ actions, however, if proven to be true.

It appears that Israel has enough respect for Nancy Pelosi to entrust her with sending a message to the government of Syria, so I guess that would qualify her as a competent messenger that they trust, if nothing else.

President Bush has in the past realized that we need a coalition in these times of defending the democratic principles which we hold dear. I just fail to see what will be gained by isolating ourselves when even Israel is willing for dialogue with the country of Syria.

I’m guessing that Assad is a dictator but then again so is our buddies Saudi Arabia(royalty?), not to mention Kuwait, so what else is new?

Anyway, it really does not hurt to talk(speak softly, but carry a big stick applies here).

    12. Scared Monkeys on April 5th, 2007 2:39 pm

      Jerry

The sad part is the media has the woman to use as the example of how effective a woman can be, Condi Rice.

But a strong Republican black woman does not fit in the world view of the media.

      Tom

    13. Brenda on April 5th, 2007 2:50 pm

If only Condi would run for Pres!! I’d be so proud to vote for her…and not “because she’s a woman”. THAT is the stupidest reason a REAL woman would vote for any candidate. I’d vote for her because she is brilliant, stable, self-confident, articulate, speaks 5 languages (no joke), is amazingly knowledgeble re: world affairs, and is very good a diplomacy. I couldn’t care less if she was a woman or a man (let’s say Claude Rice ;>) If we are not voting for the best candidate, we will have exactly the government we don’t deserve. (Well, some people will deserve what they get.)

In comparison to the wonderful Ms. Rice, Nancy Pelosi is, well…..where ARE those men in black!??

My goodness, what do you think she has portrayed herself as on TV and what does she think these ppl think of her. They knew she was coming in to bloster her power in the US and it backfired. She does not portray a women seeking democracy.

      Brenda -

More than likely she was to deliver the message on the qt(ie, with no public acknowlegement or fanfare as is often done in the real world of international diplomacy) and she muffed it.

Oh well, back to the drawing board, I guess.

    19. murph on April 5th, 2007 8:09 pm

Pelosi is a legend in her own mind!!

    20. Katablog on April 5th, 2007 11:36 pm

Kay Zee: Get real please. Nancy probably said something like “is there anything I can tell Syria” and Israel said “yeah, same as what we’ve said before”. From that Nancy trodded into Syria and “transposed” the message a bit to make herself look important.

This woman is a nut case. She fancies herself as the Commander in Chief (trying to dictate foreign policy in Iraq) and now, the Secretary of State too boot. The woman should go back and do her job that she’s paid to do in Congress and stop playing games, taking trips on the taxpayers’ dime and making a fool of herself.

    21. kay zee ess on April 6th, 2007 6:24 am

      Katablog

Real or not, that is the way its done. dennisintn expressed it best “…was further prove that she doesn’t have a clue about what she’s doing”

As much as I disdain the appearance of “taking her side”, the point being made here is that there seems to be a BIPARTISAN approach to seeking diplomacy with Syria. She, nor the other Democrats AND Republicans are making fools of themselves in at least seeking intelligent communications between two countries. Rather, to not even want to make the attempt is to make a fool of oneself, if you catch my drift.

    22. Leslie on April 6th, 2007 7:32 am

How very sad to read all this Nancy Pelosi bashing and even more disturbing to read praise for Condi Rice.

    23. nurturer on April 6th, 2007 11:04 am

She’s a restauranteur, not a diplomat. And it shows.

    24. Leslie on April 6th, 2007 2:55 pm

Maybe if the acclaimed Dr. Rice had been able to understand the August 6, 2001 President’s Daily Brief which read ” Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in the US” was a warning of a clear and present danger and not a historical document; Pelosi could have stayed home.

    25. Greg Smallwood on April 7th, 2007 1:42 am

Is that 2 and 2 business to keep the liberals out? Somehow, Leslie must have slipped through.

Leslie, Ms. Pelosi is exactly what is wrong with the leadership in our country. She’s a self serving corrupt politician. She has no agenda to make anything any better just stuff to enrich her and her husband.

My favorite is her “timetable” to get our troops out of Iraq. What are you going to say to the guy that dies 3 months from now. “You died so that we could have a timetable? You died because we weren’t really sure that we wanted to take the heat for immediately ending the war so we’ll just admit defeat and then bleed a few more troops lives while we wring our hands.” If it’s time to bring the troops home, bring them home. You can’t have your cake and eat it too with soldiers lives. It’s all or nothing in my mind, we should either make up our minds that it’s worth ending Iran’s nuclear goals or we should bring them all home tomorrow. I’m tired out watching young US soldiers playing target for suicide bombers.

      Finally, it’s C-h-a-m-p-a-g-n-e.

    26. Mortella on April 7th, 2007 3:35 am

      #24,
I can assure you that Dr. Rice understood the Daily Briefing perfectly. Too bad you are incapable of doing the same. Without specifics, it was pretty broad. And nothing new at all. What should Dr. Rice have done? Shut down every flight in the country permanently? Get real!

So Bin Laden was determined to strike and might even use airplanes! Big Whoop! President Bush had been in office only nine months when 9/11 happened, three of which he was prevented from making his appointments by the DNC refusing to admit defeat in the election. Clinton received the same warning and had eight years to make corrections and failed to do so. Why should Dr. Rice take it more seriously with only a very few months in office if Clinton didn’t with all those years?

Pelosi is out of bounds and should be tried under the Logan Act and declared an Enemy of the State. They want subpoenas and inquisitions and testimonies under oath so let’s see that they get them. Only let them be the ones answering the questions for a change. Let’s see if they can be tripped up on very minor details the way Scooter Libby was framed by that special prosecutor.

No one elected Pelosi POTUS! Only the President sets foreign policy, not some first term Speaker of the House. The Israeli have denied even telling Pelosi what she conveyed to Syria that they said so she is also a liar and a very dangerous one!

Our ally is Lebanon! Got that? NOT Syria. And until the Syrians get out of Lebanon and stop sponsoring terrorists, that’s the way it will stay. No one authorized Pelosi to negotiate foreign policy on behalf of this country no matter what delusions of grandeur she may have. This woman is a nutcase and a disaster waiting to happen. She won’t stop with this little fantasy of hers until she is stopped. Far too out of touch with reality and even imagining herself given messages to convey that never happened.

What an embarrassment this woman is and she is totally tone deaf to diplomacy as it would seem are some who post here. Well, at least one.

The legislative branch of the government does NOT set foreign policy no matter how much they might like to. This is the worst congress in the history of this country. See the list of pork they bought votes with to pass that timeline fiasco, depending on Bush to save them from their own actions by vetoing it.

Wouldn’t it be a good joke on them if he signed the thing and hung them out to dry on their own actions. Would serve the whole stinking lot of the right, too.

    27. Leslie on April 7th, 2007 7:35 am

One plus one equals two! Hey, I slipped through again. The last time I checked the US was not at war with Iran. The stated reason for invading Iraq was “to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein’s support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people”.
There were no WMD, Hussein is dead and the Iraqi people are about as free as they have ever been. You won – bring your soldiers home alive.
Were you aware that your young dead soldiers were brought back to the United States like baggage?
Before Congress passed the new law,(in 2006) the (war) dead were typically flown to the commercial airport nearest their families. The flag-draped caskets were taken off the plane by ordinary ground crew members (with forklifts) and handed over to the family at a warehouse in a cargo area.
That’s what you get when you allow chickenhawks to start a war that is just an excuse for them and their pals to bleed your country while some American citizen’s watch and applaud. It’s time to put down the champagne and see the truth.

    28. Leslie on April 7th, 2007 9:38 am

    30. Leslie on April 8th, 2007 1:41 am

Dave; when you have the facts you don’t need the “clues”. I don’t want your pity and I do not know what you are talking about. Please explain – if you are able to.

    31. Ramlady on April 8th, 2007 3:19 am

Hey Leslie….Here’s a poser for you: Why do you suppose Clinton-crony Sandy Berger (the Burglar) stole classified documents from the National Archives relating to events during the Clinton years leading up to 9/11? Why oh why would he feel the need to stuff those documents down his pants and socks and smuggle them out of the National Archives? What “facts” have you gleaned about that from surfing those anti-Bush blogs? Since you refer to American soldiers as “your soldiers,” I take it you’re not from any of the fifty great united states of America so it doesn’t really matter too much what you think of our elected or appointed officials. Luckily, there are enough conservatives left in America who care enough about our country to try to prevent the wacko liberals from ruining this country as they have ruined most of western Europe and Canada. Your time would be better spent criticizing your own government rather than slamming conservatives on American blogs. BTW liberalism MUST be a mental disorder as evidenced by your high opinion of Nancy Pelosi over Condi Rice. Sadly, you have no clue or facts.

    32. Leslie on April 8th, 2007 11:22 am

Ramlady: Don’t feel sad for me! If you really believe that my beautiful country of Canada has been ruined by wacko liberals, you need to spend more time researching the news and less time composing posts containing misinformation and juvenile insults.

    33. Ramlady on April 8th, 2007 3:30 pm

Oh Leslie, I could never be as juvenile or insulting as you are, and don’t flatter yourself; I don’t feel sad for you. I think you’ve got just what you asked for in your little socialist utopia up there. Happy Easter!!

    34. Jon on April 8th, 2007 5:17 pm

So why the hell did people vote her in?
I certainly hope notjust because she’s a woman.
When we vote, I sure hope we think “Out with the OLD, and in with the NEW.

    35. Ramlady on April 8th, 2007 8:13 pm

#34; Voters in her district in California (San Francisco) elected her as their U.S. Representative in Washington. Her fellow Representatives, led by the narrow newly-elected Democrat majority in the House voted for her to become Speaker of the House. It is NOT the job of the Speaker of the House to play unauthorized foreign diplomat. In case you’re interested, it was not correct for Newt Gingrich to assume that role either during the Clinton presidency. Foreign policy is the role of the Executive branch–not the Legislative branch.

    36. Brenda on April 9th, 2007 10:35 am

I wonder if Canada was ever invaded if they’d DEMAND we stay out of the war…..????

      Dear Leslie,

Comparing Condi to Pelosi is like comparing a beautiful show dog to what a show dog leaves behind (via its behind!).

Condi is highly capable of performing her duties without Nancy’s meddling. Nancy is doing no more than defying the President because she can. A willful b1tch.

Sorry you folks in Canada don’t like America/
      Americans. We don’t care.

    38. Tammy on April 9th, 2007 2:37 pm

I think this Pelosi character is a total idiot. She’s the Jane Fonda of our time. She’s a disgrace to this country in her politics. Her graniose ideas are obviously all self serving and not well thought out and clearly not in the best interest of the American people, only Nancy’s interests. More so, she’s a blatant disgrace to women who have a brain and know how to use it. It’s obvious this chick was dropped on her head more than once. She does not speak for me. She apparently hasn’t bothered to listen to the American people anyway, her mouth is flapping to much to listen. God Lord, what school did this woman attend? Shut it down, quick.

I wouldn’t elect Pelosi to scrub the crap out of my dog pen let alone create her own government within a government, speak for the American people, or anything else, especially abroad. She’s a total embarrasment to the US and ought to be brought up on some kind of charge like treason just to shut the idiot up.
